"So, this one comes from my buddy, Wilson Hernandez from Tennis Club. It’s taken me a few days to get to this review but I’m glad Wilson took the time to share with me the latest from Pittsburg, KS band, Basset Hound.
The single is “Boat Song” and though simply titled, it bears a storied mix of surf and garage rock styles ala Parquet Courts meets The Strokes. Guitarist and singer, Gus Brunetti, channels his inner Andrew Savage on vocals; he sing-shouts the lyrics like he’s reading them from a crumpled-up note in his hand, while the frenetic guitars squiggle away like an outtake from Light Up Gold.
“I can feel your undertow/Pull me into your ego” sings Brunetti, “And I am the id/I tend to swim away.”
The words leave his mouth like a curse.
A full length would sound pretty sweet, but for now “Boat Song” does a good job of introducing the band. It’s a nice sound, and luckily not one limited to just Brooklyn, NY; who knew you could find this much fuzz on the plains of Kansas?"
